Excellent facilities at both ends of the line and a choice of open and closed carriages, this is a great day out for all ages, whatever the weather.Originally built in 1875 to serve the mines of Eskdale, today, the railway provides a unique opportunity to take a step back in time. Travel the full seven miles of history between the once important Roman harbour of Ravenglass, The Lake Districts only coastal village at Ravenglass, and Dalegarth for Boot Station in the heart of the National Park. There are seven intermediate stops en route and the journey passes through ancient woodlands and mountain scenery including a view of England’s highest mountains, the Scafells ( 3,209ft). Take the opportunity to connect to the many walking routes and places of interest along the way, admire the estuary and mountain views on your journey and keep an eye out for some of England’s rarest wildlife including red squirrels.
Excellent accessible facilities at both main station include licensed cafes, children’s play areas and free wi-fi, heritage steam and diesel engines pulling a choice of open and closed carriages, visit the free Museum and find out about our heritage at Ravenglass or visit the ancient St Catherines Church and Englands oldest Watermill whilst at Dalegarth for Boot. There are many walks and trails to suit all abilities linking intermediate and main station stops including Roman Bathhouse at Ravenglass (0.5 miles), Muncaster Fell (5 miles), Eskdale Cycleway (7 miles), Irton Fell (4.5 miles), Blea Tarn 2 miles), Giggle Alley Japanese Garden (1.5 miles), Stanley Ghyll Waterfall 2.5 miles) and Hardknott Pass (7 miles).
