At 8:30am, your private English-speaking tour guide will greet you at your downtown Yangzhou hotel lobby before heading to Slender West Lake, the most popular attraction in Yangzhou, where willow and peach trees, flowers, bridges, and pavilions sprawling along its surrounding. While the most famous structure of the lake is an elegant five-pavilion-bridge built by salt merchants in 1757 to commemorate the visit of Emperor Qianlong of Qing Dynasty, the twenty-four-bridge scenic area is the best spot to appreciate different gardening styles of north and south China. You will also visit nearby Bonsai Museum and be amazed by a variety highly stylized bonsai trees. Lunch will be provided at a local restaurant.
After lunch break, ride your rental bike to the tomb of King Liu Xu and his queen of Han Dynasty. Liu Xu was appointed as the guardian king of Yanzghou region in 117 BC and remained in power for 64 years. The tomb was built about 100 years after Terracotta Warriors and Horses tomb in Xi'an with more than 2,000 years of history. It utilized "Huang Chang Ti Chou" method which is an unique wooden burial methodology developed in Han Dynasty by using only wood as building material in sophisticated jigsaw puzzle formations. This underground wooden palace consists of kitchen, living room, bathroom, servant quarter, and owners' caskets. Other cultural relics are also exhibited here, such as ladders used by tomb raiders, bathing tools, jade armors, and a 2,000-year-old business card. The tomb of King Liu Xu and his queen is the largest and most sophisticated "Huang Chang Ti Chou (jigsaw puzzle)" burial structured excavated in China so far.
Next, continue your bike ride to Geyuan Garden, a traditional Chinese garden built in 1818 by Huang Zhiyun who is a wealthy salt merchant in late Qing Dynasty and lover of bamboo trees. The garden is consist of 3 parts: a small bamboo trees garden, rockery, and the residence. There are more than 60 varieties of bamboo trees in the back garden along with rockery and plants representing four seasons complimenting the well preserved residence of its owner.
After the garden visit, you will be transferred back to your downtown Yangzhou hotel where this tour concludes.
