San Gimignano is famous for its medieval architecture, unique in the preservation of about a dozen of its tower houses, which, with its hilltop setting and encircling walls form 'an unforgettable skyline'. It is encircled by three walls and dominate the ruins of a fortress dismantled in the 16th century. There are eight entrances into the city, but the main gates are Porta San Giovanni on the ridge extending south, towards Siena and Pisa and Porta San Matteo to the north west, towards Florence and Chianti.
The main streets are Via San Matteo and Via San Giovanni, which cross the city from north to south and the heart of the town are: the Piazza Duomo, on which stands the Collegiate Church and its medieval Town Hall with Torre Grossa and the Piazza della Cisterna with its towers and a central well. The towers in San Gimignano dominate the city and make it the picturesque landscape of a postcard, once there you will not miss the Fortress with its amazing views.
