Take an in-depth historical walking tour of Budapest with a private guide and see key locations and cultural artifacts from Hungary’s communist era. Your expert guide will explain Hungary’s turbulent recent history–from the rule of Big Brother to the fall of the Iron Curtain. Visit the area surrounding the Hungarian Parliament Building and hear stories about WWI, WWII, the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Walk along the streets of Budapest and stop at a private exhibition space to get an idea of daily life under communist rule. Your private guide will meet you at your central Budapest hotel to start your 3-hour historical walking tour of the city. Journey back in time to glimpse what life was like during Hungary’s communist era, and get a fascinating overview of the political history of Hungary as a whole.

Your expert guide will share stories about life behind the Iron Curtain–how kids were raised and families lived, where and how people traveled, the difficulties in getting a passport–and many other revealing experiences.

Learn the story of Hungary’s actions during WWI and WWII, and about the new communist government that took power after WWII. That government’s heavy-handed leadership style led to a revolt against the government and the Soviet policies it embraced, culminating in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. You’ll follow your guide through streets where important protests, speeches and marches of the revolution were held. At Liberty Square, you’ll find the city’s last remaining tribute to the former Soviet Union.

The area surrounding the Hungarian Parliament Building is another important landmark; here bullets were fired and subsequent actions contributed to the civilian revolt. Hear about the communist politician Imre Nagy, who refused to follow the orders of Moscow and was executed for treason post-revolution.

You can visit a private exhibition that features items from Hungarian home life, displaying the extensive reach of propaganda in communist Hungary. You can check out the collection of communist-related items such as red and blue passports, registration books for party members, pins, medals and currency.

During your tour, you'll stop at a local cafe for pastries and coffee, tea or mineral water and enjoy further discussion with your guide. At the end of the three hours, you’ll gain an understanding of recent Hungarian history and how the last century’s events have shaped present day Hungary. Your tour will end in central Budapest and you can choose to continue exploring at your leisure.
