Choose between a morning, afternoon or evening tour, and then meet your private guide at your Budapest hotel. This private tour is specifically catered to meet the group’s interests, so if there’s something in particular you’d like to do or see, simply let your guide know.
After an introduction to the city, take a quick ride via public transport (tickets included) to Heroes' Square, one of Budapest’s main squares, and nearby City Park (Városliget), where you’ll learn about Hungary’s history and culture through the chronological line of kings. Walk through City Park to see the exterior of Vajdahunyad Castle, a complex built for the World Fair in 1896. As your guide will point out, this castle displays typical architecture found throughout Hungary.
Next, make your way to the Szechenyi Baths, the largest thermal bath in Budapest and one of the largest public baths in Europe. Learn about Hungary’s bath culture, and if the baths are open, take a peek inside.
Take the Millennium metro back toward the city center and hop off at the end of Andrassy Boulevard. Your guide will explain the significance of this street in Hungarian culture and nobility. You'll then head to St Stephen’s Basilica, a Roman Catholic basilica named in honor of Stephen, the first King of Hungary at the turn of the 11th century. Today, it is the third-largest church in the country!
Around midday, head to a local café for a taste of traditional Hungarian pastries. Enjoy two of these homemade retes (a traditional type of strudel) with a choice of coffee, tea, soft drink or mineral water (included).
After your refreshment break, continue down to the banks of the Danube River, where you’ll be treated to a lovely view of Gellért Hill, the Citadella fortress, the Buda Hills and the Royal Palace as you cross the river via the Chain Bridge.
For the final leg of the tour, climb the steps up to the Buda Castle District, home to a 13th-century castle and palace complex of the Hungarian kings. Wander through the old cobblestone streets and alleys to the finishing point in front of Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion. From here, perhaps ask your guide for recommendations on what to do or see next.
