Start your private tour with a pickup from your central Krakow hotel and travel to Zakopane — the historical capital of Poland's southern Tatra Mountains region and the country's highest city. Spread beneath the Tatras, this lovely highland resort is a fashionable with skiers in winter and hikers in summer.
Enjoy the country views during your approximately 2-hour journey and listen as your guide shares intriguing facts about Zakopane’s history, highland folk heritage and unique ‘Zakopane Style’ architecture — a fusion of Tyrolean chalet, folk art and art nouveau. As you approach the resort, absorb the spectacular mountain setting and get a glimpse of the Zakopane Style villas and buildings that characterize the area.
Stop first at a sculptor’s workshop in the village of Chochołów, where gorgeous Hansel-and-Gretel-style houses flank the roads. Meet the artist and see how he creates his wooden folk carvings.
Next, ride Zakopane’s funicular up 3,700-foot (1,126-meter) Mt Gubałówka. Drink in the sweeping views at the top before heading back into the city and exploring its highlights.
Stroll around Pęksowy Brzyzek cemetery to see its artisanal memorials, and wander down Krupówki, a pedestrianised street lined with quaint wooden houses and shops.
Midway through the day, break for lunch (own expense) and then visit the Tatra Museum to see its displays of highland art and costumes. Continue to the charming Museum of Zakopane Style to admire its examples of furnishings and rooms, and learn about the brains behind the architectural style, the late Stanislaw Witkiewicz.
Lastly, admire the fairytale-like Jaszczurówka Chapel, a perfect example of Zakopane Style, before riding the chairlift up alongside the famous Wielka Krokiew ski jump, the largest of its kind in Poland.
In the late afternoon, travel back to Krakow, where your tour ends with a hotel drop-off.
