About an hour's drive from George Town, across the Penang Bridge, live some 25 Orangutans in a small island within the lake of Bukit Merah. These protected orphaned primates are undergoing re-habitation program before their release into the jungle, are friendly to visitors and enjoy showing off their tree skills.
Other visits include the Taiping Lake Gardens, one of the oldest and most beautiful parks in the country. Stop for lunch, then travel to Kuala Sepetang Mangrove Forest to study different species of mangrove and spot migratory birds and mud crabs.
On the way back, stop at a nearby charcoal to witness the interesting process of transforming mangrove wood into charcoal.
