Famous for its beautiful architecture and Bavarian charm, and renowned for its annual Oktoberfest, Munich has much to offer any visitor. The following is a typical tour itinerary, but your private sightseeing tour of Munich can be customized to your preferences; please list any special interests you have (art, architecture, history, culture) at the time of booking to alert your guide, so that he or she can better prepare for your private tour.
Meet your guide upon pickup at your Munich hotel, and relax on a 2-hour city tour before you continue by private vehicle to Andechs Monastery. First, stop at the Cathedral of Our Blessed Lady (Frauenkirche), constructed from red brick in the late Gothic style.
Look up at the twin towers reaching 325 feet (99 meters), higher than any other building in the area. Then, look down to find the famous 'devil's footprint' at the church entrance; your guide will regale you with legends about its origin. If you wish, climb the stairs up to the south tower for extraordinary views of Munich and the nearby Alps.
Next, head to the world-famous Hofbrauhaus, one of Munich’s oldest breweries – founded in 1589 by the Duke of Bavaria. As you look around or enjoy a stein (own expense), imagine what it was like in the late 18th century when Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived around the block and frequented the beer hall!
When you’re ready, drive with your guide to Marienplatz, situated in the heart of Munich. The square, once a market place and center for medieval tournaments and festivals, still houses the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus), which was built in the mid-1400s.
Inside, hear commentary from your guide about the medieval design, including the barrel-vaulted timber roof and a frieze of Munich’s coat of arms. Learn about the building’s current use as a toy museum (Spielzeugmuseum); situated on four levels inside the tower, the exhibits trace the history of toys from the early 19th century to the present.
During your city tour you’ll also pass by the German Museum (Deutsches Museum), with its state-of-the-art permanent and special exhibits on transportation, communication, the natural sciences, music and technology. Then, enjoy a scenic drive to Andechs Monastery (Kloster Andechs), located approximately 24 miles (40 km) southwest of central Munich.
The Benedictine abbey and Baroque church are situated on Sacred Mountain (Heiliger Berg) in Upper Bavaria, on a site originally occupied by a castle before the monastery was built in 1712. Andechs has been famous since the Middle Ages as a place of pilgrimage and for its brewery, and you can enjoy both for an hour or so.
Visit the monastery (free of charge) and take in the views of nearby Lake Ammersee, or settle in at the beer garden for lunch with a mug of monk-brewed beer (own expense) before return transport to your Munich hotel.
