Meet your private guide at your central Krakow hotel and begin with a stroll to and around Krakow Old Town and chat about your itinerary. If there is anything you really want to see, let your guide know. Your first stop is outside the ornate Church of St Anne, a building often said to be one of Poland’s most beautiful baroque churches. Learn about its history, and then cross Rynek Główny to visit St Mary’s Basilica. Admire its towering Gothic altarpiece, carved by the leading German sculptor Veit Stoss.
Continue to the Church of St Adalbert (aka the Church of St Wojciech), one of the oldest churches in Krakow Old Town, and cross to the Church of St Francis of Assisi to see its stained-glass windows and cloister. The Bishop’s Palace is next up, so have your camera ready to capture snaps of the so-called “papal window” where Pope John Paul II addressed his followers when in Krakow.
Hear tales of the popular pope as you walk onward the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. As you pose for photos in front of its baroque façade, learn about a group of nuns, known as the Poor Clare Sisters, who live in the nearby convent.
Finally, stroll up the hill to see Wawel Royal Castle and visit Wawel Cathedral. Hear stories and secrets from the castle’s past, and make your way up to the cathedral’s Sigismund Bell. The route to the bell tower takes in some 70 steps; if you’re not up for the climb, use the time to explore the cathedral instead.
