Great cycling trail with Mountain bikes in the surroundings of Vientiane on a new paved road, passing picturesque rice fields and mountains of the Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area.Vientiane - Ban Tanmixay - Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area

From Vientiane, a truck or tuk-tuk brings us together with the bikes to Ban Tanmixay village, a small village behind the Dong Dok University campus. This village, only 25 minutes away, is the starting point of our cycling tour on a paved new road, passing picturesque rice fields to the left and the mountains of the Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area on our right.

Upon reaching the River Time Resort at the Nam Ngum river, we have some time for some rest and cold drinks. From the resort’s kitchen, we pick up our lunch boxes and take a ferry down the river for about 30 minutes to Ban Thadindeng, a Hmong village. We explore the village before continuing to cycle on a dirt road in the midst of the rice fields. After passing Ban Thakai, we continue our journey to Ban Tontam, where we'll finally have our deserved picnic lunch at the nice "Sala" (meeting hall) of the village, which is beautifully nestled at a pond filled with countless purple lotus flowers, and with the nearby Phou Khao Khoauy mountain range as a picture worthy backdrop.

After lunch, we will cycle to Ban Thakokhai to take a ferry for crossing the Nam Ngum river. The final destination of our cycling tour is the Ban Pako Resort, where we will take another boat for going up-stream to Ban Somesamai. Here our truck or tuk-tuk, respectively, is waiting for our return to Vientiane. If time allows, we will stop at Wat Veunphan temple opposite to Ban Somesamai for a short visit.
