This tour takes you about one hour from São Paulo by private vehicle and allows you to choose from a selection of local restaurants! Embu das Artes, also known as Embu, is a charming, artists’ town located just 30 minutes from the hustle and bustle of downtown São Paulo. Hop in your private vehicle upon pickup from your hotel and enjoy the short drive with commentary from your guide.
When you arrive in Embu, meander through the historical downtown along the cobblestone streets and admire the colonial architecture, including the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary (Nossa Senhora do Rosário). This well-preserved 17th-century cathedral, founded by Jesuit priests, was constructed with thick adobe walls in a simple Baroque style common to the state of São Paulo. Next door, view the Museu de Arte Sacra (Museum of Sacred Art), located in the former Jesuit quarters.
Accompanied by your guide, check out the wonderful art galleries and artisan shops selling locally made handicrafts, including rustic wood furniture and reasonably priced paintings, and chat with the friendly people you’ll find there. If you visit Embu on a weekend, head to the open-air crafts fair, which draws people from all over Brazil. Here, vendors have sold their handmade goods – such as sculptures, jewelry and paintings, as well as fruit, plants, flowers and traditional foods – for more than 70 years.
When you’re hungry, your guide will point out a wide selection of eateries where you can dine on lunch and sample delicious regional dishes including those with German influences. If you’d like, enjoy the ever-popular cachaça, Brazil’s liquor made from fermented sugarcane juice (own expense).
When you’ve had your fill of food and souvenir shopping, your guide will drive you back to your São Paulo hotel.
