The ancient city of Chichen Itza (which means “the mouth of the well of the Itzas”) is Mexico’s most extensively restored archaeological parks. The site takes up about 4 square miles with temples that are laid out like a representation of an enormous calendar. On your tour you will have approximately 4 hours to explore the ancient city with one on one instruction from your experienced photography guide.
You will have the opportunity to photography El Castillo, the largest pyramid also known as the Pyramid of Kukucan which has 365 steps, 52 panels and 18 terraces. Archaeologists have recently discovered that the grand pyramid which was built by the Maya around 1,000 years ago to worship a snake god, has a huge cenote below it. Researchers believe it may have been built on top of the cenote deliberately as it may have had deep religious significance to the ancient civilization.
Continuing on your tour of Chichen Itza you will discover the ancient Mayan Ball Court, the temple of the jaguars with rattlesnakes and jaguar heads carved into the stone, the Tzompantli which means “Temple of Skulls”, El Caracol meaning “The Snail” due to its circular structure and staircase which is an ancient observatory, and Chichen Viejo, meaning “old Chichen”, which is the oldest part of the city and has structures dating back to the pre-Toltec times.
In addition to the amazing structures at Chichen Itza there are many other great subjects for photography lovers, including the local merchants and their hand crafts set up along the pathway and the scenic views and Mexican towns along the way to and from the site.
Your tour of Chichen Itza has a photography focus and your tour guide may be able to answer some questions about the history and structures, however he/she is not a certified historical guide. If you are interested in learning the history of the ancient city there are historical guides available for hire at the cite and your tour guide will be able to help you negotiate a good price.
