After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, artists joined together to transform East Berlin's derelict buildings and abandoned factories into art workshops, collectives and studios, fashioning a new identity for the reunited city and paving the way for Berlin's world-renowned art scene. Today, there are now more than 300 art galleries scattered throughout the city.
Walk down Auguststrasse, the original core of Berlin’s artistic community in the early 1990s. Stop by Kunsthaus Tacheles, a gutted 1907 department store occupied by a collective of artists from all over the world. Walking through its labyrinth of graffiti-covered workshops and exhibition spaces, you’ll get a sense of what this area of Berlin looked like when the Wall fell: a hotbed of new ideas and new ways of creating art out of the rubble of the past.
Visit KW Institute for Contemporary Art, EIGEN + ART Lab, Galerie Gerken and other prestigious art galleries along Auguststrasse and nearby Linienstrasse, learning about artworks from your guide along the way.
