This the only attraction you'll visit without your guide, as outside guides aren't allowed in but temple staff is available if you have any questions.
Opened in 2005, Akshardham Temple combines elements of a house of worship with a high-tech theme park. Inside the elaborate buildings, you can watch an IMAX film about a child yogi from the 18th century; take a 12-minute boat ride through a diorama about 10,000 years of Indian history; view a musical fountain and light show; and learn about the temple guru’s life in an exhibit that uses robotics, fiber optics and sound effects.
Then meet your private guide, who accompanies you for the rest of the day, providing informative commentary and recommendations for snack breaks or lunch, as needed. Your next stop is a revered Sikh temple, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib. Built in honor of the eighth Sikh guru, Har Krishan, the Gurudwara is known for its well, which is believed to contain healing waters. Meals are also a major feat here — every day in the Gurdwara kitchen (langar hall), volunteers prepare and serve meals for thousands of people.
Continue to Birla Mandir Temple, also known as Lakshmi Narayan, a handsome red and gold temple decorated with intricate carvings. Learn about the temple's early disavowment of the caste system, and how Mahatma Gandhi attended the building’s inauguration in 1938. The powerful Birla family financed the temple’s construction, along with a dozen others throughout India.
Move on to one of the oldest church buildings in the city, Sacred Heart Cathedral, which Pope John Paul II visited twice during his papacy. Hear about the colonial officers of the British Empire who backed the construction of the church, which opened in 1934. Then head to Sai Baba Temple on Lodhi Road, built in honor of a renowned 19th-century saint, who is revered by both Hindu and Muslim devotees.
At the end of your day tour, your guide returns you to your hotel.
