Recently, Peruvian cuisine has become one of the trendiest in the world, but its origins go back thousands of years. The secret behind the success of Peruvian food is the use of fresh, unique ingredients and the cultural heritage of the country’s indigenous people, Afro-Peruvian population and immigrants from Asia and Europe. This tour will let you experience the very best of the culinary world of Lima, named the “Gastronomic Capital of the Americas.” You will be picked up from the Port of Callao to begin your gastronomy tour of Lima. You will first go to a local market to learn about and taste some of the local fruits, meats, spices, and vegetables.

You will find basic crops like the tomato and potato, but very likely different from what you have seen before both in shape, size, number and varities. Hundreds of varieties of potato were grown in Peru long before the Spanish arrived in America, and the earliest evidence of the potato dates from more than 8,000 years ago. Today about 4000 varieties of potatoes exist in Peru.

You will come across the typical lucuma fruit, which has a creamy consistency and is a popular ice cream flavor choice among Peruvians. Another unique sample is the camu camu, a jungle fruit with a soft orange color, shown to provide 30 times more vitamin C than oranges.

You will become familiar with the different types of meats and fishes in Peru, including the paiche, a tropical fish native to the Amazon region of South America that grows to more than 6 feet (2 m) in length and can weigh up to 440 pounds (200 kg).

This and much more you will see and learn about during your gastronomy tour, and afterwards it is time to savor many of these products as you head to the restaurant Costa Verde for lunch. Here, you will be able to sit beachfront and enjoy a large buffet with traditional Peruvian dishes and desserts. There will also be a demonstration of how to make ceviche and pisco sours, and you will be served a complimentary pisco sour. The buffet lunch includes a chicha morada, a sweet Peruvian beverage made with purple corn, spices and pineapple. Other beverages are at your own expense.
