The oasis of Bahla owes its prosperity to the Banu Nebhan, the dominant tribe in the area from the 12th to the end of the 15th century. The ruins of the immense fort, with its walls and towers of unbaked brick and its stone foundations, is a remarkable example of this type of fortification and attests to the power of the Banu Nebhan.
Afternoon we proceed to visit Jabel Shams -The Sun Mountain- The slopes of Jebel Shams cascade down from Oman’s high mountain peaks which are cut into by steep valleys which in Oman are called Wadis. Walks here are at over the magic 2,000 meters meaning they are high altitude and not for those with susceptibility to altitude sickness. Snow occasionally falls on the higher slopes and at all times of the year the temperature is cooler than in the plains below. The life style here is limited by the availability of water and so Goat herding has been the traditional way of life and the goat hair is used to create woven products, which you can buy as a souvenir. Look out for a few small areas with farms, they use water from tiny springs, just above the fields. The great canyon of Wadi Nekhar is often called ‘The Grand Canyon’ and with a drop of up to 1,000 meters its easy to see why. In places this is only just wide enough for the vehicle to pass, in others it opens up to grand vistas including to cliff edge above. Walks along the cliff edge offers views which cover a wide area. However to appreciate the scale, a walk just below its edge offers new vistas with almost each step.
Drive back to reach Muscat late afternoon.
