Enjoy this day trip from Chengdu and visit the Leshan Giant Buddha by high-speed train. You will walk down the ancient Red Sand Cliff Road to appreciate the 1300-year-old Leshan Giant Buddha. Apart from that you will also see the ancient Wuyou Temple and enjoy a delicious traditional lunch.Once you are picked up by your guide at your Chengdu hotel, you will head to the Chengdu East Train Station to catch the high-speed train to Leshan.
During the 1-hour train ride, you can mingle with locals and enjoy the idyllic landscape of the Chengdu, which changes throughout seasons - from being covered by yellow rapeseed flowers in spring, to greenery of rice paddies at summer, to colorful harvest in the autumn. Once you arrive at Leshan, you will head off to the Giant Buddha Park. Leshan Giant Buddha is a 71-meter (233 ft) tall stone statue, built during 713 AD-803 AD by Tang Dynasty. It is carved out of a cliff face that lies at the confluence of three rivers. It is the largest Buddha statue in the world, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will first climb 300 steps to the top of Lingyun Hill, which will take you about 20-30 minutes. On the way, you will see a Black Dragon Pond and many ancient stone carvings and Buddhist sculptures. On the top of Lingyun Hill, you will view three rivers: Min, Qingyi and Dadu river as they confluence together. You will be able to explore Buddhist sculptures and murals inside Lingyun Temple. You will then descend along the Red Sand Cliff Road to view the phenomenal Leshan Giant Buddha from the bottom, and climb up at the opposite side of the hill. The walk will take you around 30-40 minutes. Once you relish the sight of the Buddha, you will keep walking to the Wuyou Temple, which has been slightly neglected in the past and thus retained its tranquil Buddhist atmosphere.
You will then have lunch at a local restaurant, after which you will visit the temple.
From the Giant Buddha is the temple separated by the Min river. Crossing the Haoshang bridge, you will hike for about 20 minutes before reaching the temple. You will spend there around 1.5-hours, during which time you will be able to admire an ancient courtyard, as well as a hall dedicated to the Wuyou Buddha (a frightful-looking figure that was cast in India at around 618-907), and the Arhats Hall with beautifully-painted life-size clay figures of 500 Buddha’s disciples.
Later in the afternoon you will get back to the train station and return to Chengdu.
