The State Russian Museum was established in St. Petersburg by order of the Emperor Nikolay II in 1895 and was ceremonially opened on March 1898, becoming the first in Russia and the state Museum of Russian fine art. The main building and the exposition is located in the Mikhailovsky Palace. It was built for the younger son Paul I - Michael. Hence its name.
