This large group walking tour of Trieste is an interesting way to get introduced to Jewish heritage in the city. The culture of the Jewish community of Trieste goes back to the 13th century and during the 19th century that the first navigation and insurance companies developed such as Lloyd Adriatico and the Generali which were both founded by members of the Jewish middle class.Your itinerary to discover the history and traditions of the Jewish community in Trieste begins from Piazza Unità d’Italia and then passes into the former Jewish ghetto, rich in antique dealers and knickknack shops.

Then you will head onto the “Carlo and Vera Wagner” Museum of the Jewish Community in which many objects of Jewish ritual art are on display along with documents and books which testify to the life of the Jews in Trieste. These artifacts are indeed one of the most important heritages of the Jews in Italy.

When the visit has finished, you proceed on foot down San Nicolò where you can still find the Antique Bookshop which used to be run by Umberto Saba and still has many rare and precious volumes on display. Walk by the historical Pasticceria, “La Bomboniera” founded by a Hunarian Jewish family. Next will be the Synagogue of Trieste, a magnificent building which dates back to the beginning of the 19th century and still has importance in Europe today. (Neither the synagogue nor the Jewish museum are open for visits on a Friday or Saturday or during days when there is a religious celebration).

The tour will continue by private minibus outside the city center to the Rice Factory of San Sabba, the only Nazi extermination camp in Italy.
At the end the group will be taken back to your accommodation.
