The history of Delphi stretches back in time to at least 1500 BC before the classical Greek period when it was famed throughout the ancient world not only because it was acknowledged to be the center of the world as divinely designated by Zeus, but also due to its oracle, the eternal flame which burned in the temple of Apollo, its Pythian Games, a fore runner of the modern Olympics, and its use as a treasury by the many Greek City states. Further, its history extended after Ancient Greece when even Roman emperors protected the site & continued to send delegations to seek the Oracles advice.
In visiting Delphi, you will see for yourself the physical structures associated with this incredibly long history of use and learn of their associated histories and rich mythology. You will also have plenty of time to visit to the impressive museum to take in the many artifacts from as far back as the 15th century BC, with highlights of the Naxian Sphinx, statue of Antinoos and the bronze sculpture of a charioteer among others.
