The village's 67 protected buildings of Holloko are characteristic peasant houses from the 17-19th century. Hollókő is an outstanding example of a deliberately preserved traditional settlement. The 400 residents of Hollókő are the Paloc (palocz) people. Besides their special dialect, they retain their old folk traditions, crafts, songs and their colourful, richly decorated folk costumes. Hollókő is a 1,5 hours trip from Budapest, one of the most favored European travel destinations.
This tour gives the ability to go back in time, see how people lived their rural life here before the agricultural revolution. You will meet with people in Paloc costumes, see folk dance, see craftsmen in work, visit the Village Museum and the Doll Museum, and taste some regional food, like Paloc soup (actually cooked first in Gundel resturant Budapest) made in the Palóc way.
Insider tip: The Easter Festival in Holloko is probably the most famous in Hungary, when locals dress up in traditional celebrational costumes. There are several programs and activities during the 3 day Easter Festival, including egg painting, folklore programs, arts and crafts and kids programs. Visitors can sample traditional Easter dishes. Easter Mondays are usually a lot of fun in Hollókő, as 'Dousing Day' is practised following old traditions. Boys would douse the girls with buckets of water to ensure they become good wives. In exchange for the dousing the girls would reward the boys with Easter eggs – the main reason for which Easter eggs are decorated in Hungary.
From time to time "Paloc wedding", one of the most colourful traditional folk programs is held in Hollókő or in the nearby villages.
