Our first destination is a drive up one of the tallest 14’ers in Colorado, the infamous Mount Evans where you will see spectacular views, crystal clear mountain lakes, and wildlife including Rocky Mountain Sheep. We will then drive through Idaho Springs, one of the original mining towns of the Gold and Silver Rush and head on to Georgetown.
Georgetown is known as the “Silver Queen of the Rockies,” and was one of the last bastions of civilization during silver rush before encountering the Continental Divide. You will find abundant and well-preserved examples of buildings and mining structures from the Colorado Silver Boom.
Time permitting, we will continue our tour up the famous Guanella pass. For a quick study in Rocky Mountain eco-systems, you could hardly find a better example than here. This well-settled road leap-frogs the steep divide between the South Platte and Clear Creek watersheds, passing through a succession of distinct environments.
We will have plenty of time for pictures and leisurely strolls before heading back to Denver.
