Many of these temples are covered in carvings that appear to be figures stacked on top of one another in pyramid form. This private, full-day tour will expose you to many of the best examples of these temples.Your tour will begin with your pick up at 9am from your hotel or the airport, before heading to the Rockfort Temple. This temple actually contains several smaller temples within it, the most important being the Thayumanavar, the Ucchi Pillayar and the Manikka Vinayagar. Climb to the top for some splendid views of the city and river.
You will spend some time at both St John's and St Joseph's Churches, as well as the local market, before driving to Srirangam to visit the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, which is dedicated to the sleeping form of Lord Vishnu. Non-Hindus can only go up to the sixth wall but not inside the gold topped inner sanctum. The body of the Hindu Saint Ramanuja has been preserved for 1,000 years inside this temple.
After this, you will visit Jambukeshwa Temple. This is a famous Shiva temple and one of the five Pancha Bootha Kshetras (five elements--water, earth, air, fire and ether). This one is appu sthala (representing water). Next, you will visit Kallanai, a 2,000 year old dam built on the river Kallanai, (an offshoot of the Cauvery river).
Your day ends as your tour drops you back at your hotel or the airport at around 5 or 6pm.
