Your guide will show you all this and more as you uncover the tortured past and fantastic present of Germany’s capital city; all in air-conditioned comfort with your own driver.Your day will start with your guide meeting you at your hotel before driving to Germany’s parliament building, the Reichstag. On the way your guide will kick off the day with an overview of Berlin’s 800-year history, from its humble beginnings to the creative world city it is today.
You’ll then pass Berlin’s gleaming €1bn main train station, Hauptbahnhof, before driving to visit the most famous entrance to Berlin’s historical center, the Brandenburg Gate. From there you will be taken to Berlin’s most famous Holocaust memorial, the poignant ‘Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe’.
Following this you’ll get a chance to stand above the remains of Hitler’s Bunker, where the dictator committed suicide in 1945. Afterwards you’ll continue to get a taste of what life is like in modern Berlin at Potsdamer Platz, where modern sky scrapers hint at the city’s future. From there you’ll follow the path of the Berlin Wall, past the former headquarters of the Nazi SS and the Gestapo and through the former border of East and West Berlin at Checkpoint Charlie. As you re-enter East Berlin you’ll be whisked off to Berlin’s most beautiful square, Gendarmenmarkt, where you can learn about Berlin’s 17th Century struggle through the 30 Years’ War, and how the city was brought back to life afterwards by the Great Elector.
You’ll then be taken to the grand ‘Unter den Linden’, Berlin’s former royal boulevard, lined with impressive buildings that once belonged to the royal family. On the Unter den Linden your guide will show you Bebelplatz, a beautiful square that hosts Frederick the Great’s 18th Century opera house, but was also the location of the Nazi’s book burning in 1933.
After this you’ll be shown Berlin’s most impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site, Museum Island, including the grand Berlin Cathedral, built under the last emperor of Germany, Wilhelm II, to show to the Berliners just how powerful and important he wanted the city to become.
Your tour will then continue deeper into East Berlin, past the city’s tallest structure, the TV Tower, and down the famous ‘Karl Marx Allee’, built in the early days of the East German regime as a monument to Stalin, the Moscow-style buildings radiate an imposing beauty onto “Europe’s last grand boulevard”. Your guide will then show you the longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, covered from top to bottom and end to end in paintings that celebrate the peaceful revolution of 1989.
The tour will finish with you being driven back to the hotel, or the location of your choice.
