Start your day with pickup from your central Porto hotel and settle into an air-conditioned minivan for a 30-minute sightseeing drive through the city and along the coast. Discover more about the city of Porto, which has a reputation as both a hard-working city and as the cultural capital of Portugal.
Head to Vila Nova de Gaia, the center of the region’s famous port industry and home to the port wine caves. Embark on a 1-hour cruise aboard a traditional rabelo boat (if option selected); these wooden cargo boats were originally used to transport port downriver. Relax as you glide through the water and soak up the city sights, including the six bridges than span the Douro River.
Afterward, learn about the port industry at a port wine lodge, where you’ll take part in a tasting. Sip on several different styles including white, ruby and tawny. Then, call into a local restaurant for a tantalizing Portuguese lunch.
With your appetite sated, venture into Porto city center and climb up the Clérigo Tower, a 249-foot (76-meter) tall Baroque structure that looms large over the city below. Admire the magnificent views from the top, before descending to explore the city on foot. Visit the Livraria Lello bookshop, an ornate Art Nouveau gem, and the São Bento Train Station, which is decorated with beautiful azulejos tiles. Wind through the medieval alleys of Ribeira, part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Porto Old Town.
As evening begins to fall, bid farewell to your guide as you’re dropped off back at your Porto hotel.
