Pope Francis, born Jorge Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, was ordained a priest in 1969, became Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998, and became a cardinal in 2001 before he was elected to the papacy on March 13, 2013. The first pope from the Americas and the southern hemisphere, the religious leader — known for his ability to build bridges across all faiths and backgrounds—chose his papal name in honor of St Francis of Assisi.
Meet your guide and small group in San Telmo and make your way to the city center aboard a comfortable minivan. Start your tour at the place where Bergoglio lived with his
parents and siblings during his first years of life. Visit formative
educational institutions, such as the College of Our Lady of Mercy and
Universidad del Salvador, a Jesuit university. See where the pope took
his sacraments and received his religious vocation, including Basilica
of San José de Flores, where he devoted his life to God when he was just
17 years old.
