As you travel, listen to your expert guide’s insightful commentary about the 7,000-year-old settlement and the day ahead.
On arrival, after roughly two hours on the road, climb out of your vehicle and set off on foot to discover the charming Old Town. Typified by its beautifully resorted mid-19th-century houses, art galleries, bohemian cafes and historical monuments, the Old Town is home to many of Plovdiv’s most celebrated artists. With your guide leading the way, get up close to the Thracian, Roman, Byzantine and Bulgarian antiquities, and visit the 2nd-century Roman amphitheater, which is still used for live performances today.
After your roughly 2-hour walking tour, enjoy free time for lunch (own expense) before returning to your minivan and carrying on to Bachkovo Monastery. Nestled in the Rhodopi Mountains, the monastery dates back to the 11th century. Tour the site with your guide and, as you marvel at the intricate frescoes depicting Judgment Day and Neoplatonism, listen to your guide share fascinating facts and details about its history and architecture.
When the time comes, begin the journey back to Sofia. Your day trip then concludes with a drop-off at Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in the city center.
