The Royal Palace is the official residence of the King and Queen of Cambodia, located near the banks of the Tonle Sap River. Most buildings inside the palace walls are closed to the public except on special occasions. The Palace is a magnificent example of Khmer architecture, although it was built as recently as 1866. Following is the National Museum, a distinguished looking red building, built in the shape of a Buddhist/Khmer style temple, situated at the northern gate of the Royal Palace, the museum is home to over 5000 artifacts, dating back as far back as the mighty Angkor Period.
Outside its beautifully lid skyline, you may catch a glimpse of one of the many open spaces and parks along the river banks, which the locals use for recreation and relaxation. These spaces tend to be thriving with activity in the evening as hang-out spots and exercise area for local residents.
