The tour begins at Porta Sole, a fantastic viewpoint, perfect for an introduction to the long history of Perugia. Located on the highest point of the hill, this is the place where the first stone of Perugia was put, centuries before the foundation of Rome. Following a steep stair we will reach Piazza Grimana, home of the Etruscan Arch, the most important entrance to the ancient walls of Perugia. This huge 2300 years old stone arch, made by the Etruscans on the northern side of the city, is considered one of the first arches of the history and a masterpiece of pre-roman architecture. We will walk along the Etruscan walls, looking at the area of the ancient aqueduct, one of the most interesting spots of the city, with the warm colours of the sunset.
Through picturesque alleys we will reach again Piazza IV Novembre, the center of Perugia since the Etruscan period. Here we will visit some of the most important monuments of the city; the Maggiore Fountain with its medieval sculptures, the Gothic Cathedral of St Lawrence and the Priori's Palace, masterpiece of medieval civil architecture. A pleasant walk along Corso Vannucci to reach the viewpoint of Carducci Gardens, right on top of the huge Rocca Paolina. The fortress is one of the hidden treasures of Perugia, an incredible underground city accessible through a small entrance in Piazza Italia. The tour ends at the “Covered Market” terrace, where the guide will give you some useful tips to enjoy food, wine and the vibrant nightlife of Perugia.
