Make your way to the meeting point and hop in the car or van (depending on number of participants), and then zoom out of Barcelona to another world, a land of seaside villages, a beautiful mountain range, and vineyard-clad hillsides. This half-day tour of the famed Catalonian wine region Penedès first stops in Sitges, 20 miles (35 km) south of Barcelona. The town of 26,000 people is known as the St-Tropez of Spain for its cosmopolitan air, chic vibe and gorgeous beaches.
After the brief visit, ride through the stunning Garraf mountains to the town of Avinyonet, the heart of the Penedès wine region. Once in Avinyonet, transfer to a 4x4, head to a winery and cruise right through the vineyards. Smell the terroir, the damp soil that produces such fine-tasting vino. Learn about the history of wine-making in the region as well as some special organic techniques local wine producers use.
Next, sample some wine. You’ll get the chance to drink white, red and rosé wines, as an expert leads you through the tasting, pointing out specific characteristics of each wine. After the tasting, settle in for the drive back to Barcelona, with a new knowledge and appreciation of Catalonian wine.
