Witness the splendors of Pamukkale and ancient Hierapolis on this action-packed day trip from Marmaris. Fueled by an included breakfast and lunch, visit the geological site of Pamukkale — a mountainside known as ‘Cotton Castle’ to the Turks for its dazzling white terraces and pools, all formed from solidified calcium-rich springs. Then, delve into the relics of Hierapolis, a Greco-Roman spa city built near the curative springs. See the temples, colonnaded streets, theater and necropolis, and perhaps swim in Cleopatra's Pool (own expense) once used by the Romans themselves.
Start your tour in the early morning with a pickup from your centrally located Marmaris hotel. Board your air-conditioned coach and travel to a restaurant for an included buffet breakfast of cheese, egg, olives, salad, bread and tea and coffee.
On your way to Pamukkale, stop at a carpet weaving center to see how Turkey’s carpets are produced. Then, after a break for refreshments (own expense), continue to Pamukkale, roughly 1.5 hours away. Here, visit a restaurant for a complimentary buffet lunch, accompanied by drinks that are available at your own expense.
Afterward, continue to UNESCO-listed Pamukkale itself, which means ‘Cotton Castle’ in Turkish. This incredible site was formed over the millennia as calcium bicarbonate hardened while flowing down 656-foot (200m) cliffs. With time here spent at your leisure, gaze at the glistening white, calcified terraces and basins and take photos of the fairytale-like formations around you.
Next, walk to the archaeological site of Hierapolis, a ruined Greco-Roman spa city founded in around 190BC that lies above Pamukkale's terraces. Enjoy free time to wander around the ruined temples and streets, and see the stunning, 12,000-seater theater and haunting necropolis, a cemetery of 1,200 tombs.
Before leaving, perhaps take a swim in Cleopatra’s Pool (own expense). Wade into the warm waters of this Roman-built pool and swim over the marble Roman pillars submerged in its depths.
Board your coach and relax on your return journey. After a stop at an onyx factory on route, your tour ends with an evening drop-off at your hotel in Marmaris.
