Discover South Africa’s Little Karoo region, a diverse expanse nestled between the verdant Garden Route and the Great Karoo, on this full-day trip from Knysna to Oudtshoorn. With an expert guide, visit the Cango Caves, a subterranean wonderland of eerie rock formations and vast caverns. Then, head to an ostrich farm to learn about these incredible, flightless birds. End your tour with a visit to the Cango Wildlife Ranch, a prestigious zoological park that is home to some of the world’s most endangered animals. Numbers limited to 12 people, ensuring a small-group experience. Make your own way to the prearranged meeting point in Knysna to meet your guide, or enjoy a pickup from select Knysna hotels. Then, hop aboard an air-conditioned minivan and relax on the 90-mile (145-km) journey to Oudtshoorn, the largest town in the Little Karoo region. A dry sunbaked expanse, Little Karoo is nestled between the Langeberg-Outeniqua range and the Swartberg Mountains, keeping it separate from the lush Garden Route and the wider, hotter Great Karoo.

Make your first stop at the incredible Cango Caves. Situated in a limestone ridge parallel to the majestic Swartberg Mountains, the caves consist of more than 2.5 miles (4 km) of dripstone caverns. With your guide, descend into the depths of the caves and wander along the subterranean pathways, admiring towering stalactite and stalagmite formations as you pass.

Next, visit a working ostrich farm. Get up close to these huge, flightless birds — the tallest and heaviest in the world — and marvel at the sheer size of their nests and eggs. Learn how their bulky bodies and powerful legs make them capable of carrying humans and, if you’re feeling brave, seize the chance to ride one. Following your tour, head to the farm’s restaurant to recharge with a drink and some lunch (own expense).

With your appetite sated, continue to the Cango Wildlife Ranch on the outskirts of Oudtshoorn. Internationally recognized as the Western Cape’s most prestigious zoological park, it is home to some of the world’s most endangered animals. During a tour with your guide, see white tigers, lions, cheetah, crocodiles and more.

Afterward, hop back inside your air-conditioned minivan and relax on the return journey to Knysna, where your day trip concludes back at the original start point.
