Our first destination is Dujiangyan city, 60km away from Chengdu, near where the world famous Dujiangyan Irrigation System was built over 2000 years ago. It still irrigates millions of acres of land around Chengdu Plain, which in turn makes it one of the primary food bases in China, hence why Sichuan is entitled “The Land of Abundance”. Instead of joining the visitors’ crowd to the irrigation project, we will hop on bikes and cycle through the city to a mountain foot, from where we will head towards Mt. Qingcheng.
While biking from Dujiangyan to Mt. Qingcheng, you cannot help feeling at peace as views of tranquil villages untouched by progressive development and in the distance, green-shaded mountains pass by you. Once arrived at Mt. Qingcheng, you will have the opportunity to visit a local tea farm which once used to supply green tea to the Imperial families. There you can watch how the local tea is made and if the season is right, we could even join the farmers to help pick the tea. A few more villages down, we will arrive at our final destination at the Dujiangyan Panda Sanctuary. The biking takes only half a day, which leaves us 2 hours to visit China’s adorable black and white pandas. After that we take the car back to Chengdu.
Hour by Hour Timetable:
07:30--09:00 Take the car to Dujiangyan city
09:00--09:30 Warm up cycling in the city
09:30—12:00 Cycle to the tea farm
12:00—13:30 Lunch in the tea farm
13:30—14:30 Cycle to Panda Sanctuary
14:30—16:30 Walk around to visit Panda Sanctuary
16:30—18:00 Drive back to downtown Chengdu
