Begin the tour at 9am, with a pickup from your central Varna accommodations. From there, make the 1-hour drive to your first destination, the Madara Archaeological Reserve. Upon your arrival, observe the rock relief sculpture from the dawn of the Bulgarian state back in the 8th-century. After spending about an hour in Madara, proceed to Pliska National Historical and Architectural Reserve. Pliska is the former capital of the first Bulgarian Empire, but now the Eastern Gate is open to visitors. Walk through the Imperial Palace and other ornamental buildings before you move on.
Next, head to the town of Shumen, where you will have lunch, before proceeding with the sightseeing. Visit the Shumen fortress located on a high plateau and dated as far back as the Trojan War. Visit the Sherif Halil Pasha Mosque, then head to a high point where you will be able to get an overview of the landscape. Observe the memorial complex “Founders of the Bulgarian State”, from where you will be standing. Then, take a walk through the old part of the town before departing back to Varna and returning to your accommodations.
