Make your way to the Old Jameson Distillery in Dublin’s city center. Founded in 1780, the distillery here was active until 1971. It lay abandoned until it was rebuilt as a visitor center and reopened to the public in 1997.
Upon entry, join the next available tour. The tours take place every 30 minutes throughout the day. Start with an introductory video, which tells the story of John Jameson and his famous Irish whiskey brand.
Next, set off on a guided tour and get educated in the art of triple distillation. A Jameson representative will talk you through the distillation processes as you explore the grounds. Listen as they explain the reason behind the ‘angels’ share’ — the portion of whiskey that is lost to evaporation while aging in breathable casks.
Having worked up a thirst, enter the Jameson Tasting Bar. Discover what sets Irish whiskey apart from its competitor spirits as a few lucky participants get the chance to compare and contrast the smoothness of Jameson with other whiskey styles, such as Scotch or rye. Afterward, sip on a complimentary Jameson Ginger and Lime.
The tour concludes in the bar, where you can hang around and taste more delicious Jameson cocktails (own expense). Alternatively, browse the gift shop, which features branded products including the 12-year Distillery Reserve — an exclusive bottle that can be personalized and is only sold at Jameson visitor centers.
