This informational and historical self-guided audio tour of the Napier Earthquake will take you on a journey to the past to see the areas that were devastated by the 1931 earthquake in Hawke's Bay and how they have recovered.In this audio tour, you will learn about Napier’s worst earthquake and the worst New Zealand has had in the past 100 years. The earthquake struck in February 1931 destroying and leveling most of the city’s buildings.
You’ll learn why the city is famous for its Art Deco style, and learn about the functions of some of the buildings before and after the disaster. You will also learn about the Fire which took hold shortly after the earthquake and ran rampant throughout the city devastating those buildings that were still standing and hear of the temporary accommodation set up in Clive Square.
Also on the tour is the story of Napier Banks, Trams, the Rebuilding and New Land, the Municipal Theatre, the Public Trust Building, and the Reporting of the Quake. Hear stories from Earthquake survivors Edward Waaka and Theresa Foley and along the way you'll see the Market Reserve Building, St John's Cathedral, the County Hotel, the Conservation Building with the Marine Parade Buildings, the iconic Masonic Hotel, and of the HMS Veronica.
