Depending on the weather and road conditions, the trip will take approximately 1.5 hours.
Stop along the way at a small archeological site at Vang Xang, a site that is related to the Mon Hilltribe population. Vang Xang was built in the 11th century and has some nice Buddha images, many of them still in there original state, on display. Its picturesque location along a small river makes it a perfect break while driving to our destination for the day. The lake is often overlooked as travelers tend to take the road further north to Vang Vieng before reaching Luang Prabang.
Late in the morning, arrive at the Nam Ngum Lake where you sit back, relax and enjoy a great meal at a local restaurant, overlooking the lake. Your guide will explain the work that has been done to preserve this favorite weekend and public holiday spot for residents from the capitol and the dam and its use as a hydroelectric power station for the country and surrounding Indochina neighbors. Initially a part of the Nam Ngum River, the lake now covers 250-square-kilometers of deep green water since the dam was erected in 1971 and the lake gained its popularity as a holiday and weekend break destination.
It is beyond any doubt that a boat trip (approximately 1 hour) over the pristine waters of the lake is included aboard a traditional boat before it is time to make our way slowly back to Vientiane. After disembarkation, drive back south via another route to include an interesting stop on how the local community at Ban Keun (near Phou Khao Khoauy) uses authentic means to win salt from the ground water.
By 5:30pm be returned to the front door of your hotel.
