Layer up in warm clothing, and then start your day with a pickup from your centrally located Reykjavik hotel. Sitting comfortably in your cozy transfer vehicle, journey deep into the Hengill geothermal area. As you travel, admire the otherworldly landscapes and listen to your guide share stories about Iceland.
After around 40 minutes on the road, arrive at Hellisheiði Power Station (Hellisheidarvirkjun), the largest geothermal power station in the world. Marvel at the sleek, contemporary design of Hellisheiði and spend a few moments snapping photos as your guide prepares the bikes. Then, listen to a short safety briefing before pulling on your helmet and pedaling away along the mountain trails.
With your guide leading the way, set off toward 1000 Rivers Road, a mountain road that stretches above the scenic Hengill region, toward the beautiful valley of Reykjadalur (Steam Valley). Pass by steaming geysers and boreholes, and discover how geothermal energy is used to sustainably power the entire country. Along the way, make several stops, allowing you to rest your legs and take in the sights.
On arrival, after around an hour, be wowed by the sight of steam clouds rising from gurgling melting pots and scorching-hot natural pools. Hop off of your bike and enjoy free time to explore the valley. Find yourself a comfortable spot, where you can refuel with a packed lunch provided by your guide. Then, should you wish, change into your bathing suit and thaw out in one of the hot springs.
When the time comes, dry off and change back into your clothes. Then, cycle to Hveragerði town, where your transfer vehicle awaits. Your tour ends with a drop-off back at your hotel.
Please note: The route followed during this tour is demanding. This is due to the steep and uneven nature of the mountain trails.
