The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels of insects and arachnids for 25 years. This is the original and longest running Butterfly Garden is Costa Rica. It has 4 different butterfly habitats housing up to 35 species of butterfly, a leaf cutter ant colony and over 20 species of live Costa Rican insects and arachnids in the nature center. The passionate staff and volunteers will guide you through a three acre facility where you will see just some of the amazing insects and arachnids Costa Rica has to offer. The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis and beautiful birds.

The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis and beautiful birds.The garden is open from 8:30am to 4pm with tours running constantly until 3:30pm. The tour takes 1.5-hours and is relaxed and easy walking with benches for relaxing. You will start your adventure with expert guides exploring the nature center full of live insects like beetles, tarantulas and praying mantis.
Then you will stroll through 4 enclosed greenhouses where butterflies are flying rain or shine in the butterfly gardens. This makes an excellent option for rainy afternoons in Monteverde. One of the most popular exhibits is the Leaf Cutter Ant Colony where you can see underneath the ground at just what all those ants are up to with the leaf that they carry.
The garden is partnered with the local public library so all proceeds from the gift shop go directly to helping the community. Tours are offered in English and Spanish.
