After early morning hotel pickup in Palenque, you'll start driving in direction to Marques de Comillas in the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve. After 3.5 hours of driving, you will reach "Las Guacamayas." Here, you will have the opportunity to see how a community has been a pioneer in preserving endangered birds. Located on the bank of the River Lacantún and adjacent to the Biosphere Reserve Montes Azules, this community has become aware of the importance of strategic alliances and conservation of ecological systems for the future.
Part of the municipality of Marqués de Comillas, Chiapas, the entire rural community is made up of 40 families from the state of Oaxaca, belonging to the chinanteca ethnicity. Learn from your guide about their initiatives to help in the conservation of the red macaw, extinct in Chiapas for many years. Once there, you will also have time to enjoy a regional breakfast (45 minutes). The visit also a tour in a motor boat on the Lacantun river. During the ride, you can admire the flora and fauna in their natural habitat, seeing species like the howler monkeys, the red Guacamaya, the white tail deer, the toucan and the white falcon, among others.
After approximately 2.5 hours, you will then make a stop to observe the artificial nests to conserve the red macaw using fallen trees. At the end of this visit, you will have time to have lunch (not included) before driving back to Palenque and being dropped-off at your hotel.
