Enjoy some light walking around the Greenwich and West Village areas with a guide, and pop into local jazz joints for some live music.Starting at Waverly Place, follow your guide on a light walking tour through Greenwich and West Village. The tour changes weekly based on who’s performing, so its always an “in the moment” experience. Walk through the famous Washington Square Arch on your way to the first venue, where you will be escorted past the main bar where a jazz room awaits behind the velvet curtain.
After a great set of music, walk to one of the most intimate jazz clubs in the Village that only seats about twenty people. You will have the chance to sip a glass of wine and enjoy the low candlelight and music. This venue also serves some of the best pizzas and desserts in NYC at an additional expense.
After this set, head a little further west, passing the famous original location of Cafe Society, a hotbed for social activism where Billie Holiday became famous for singing the song “Strange Fruit,” an anthem for the Civil Rights movement. You'll also pass Stonewall Bar— the famous birthplace of the gay rights movement, as well as the club where countless entertainers got their first big push, including Barbara Streisand.
Next stop is an intimate underground club where a legendary pianist and singer holds forth on Monday nights. He has been featured in movies including “Ray” and has been compared to Art Tatum. His final set is typically followed by a jam session so feel free stick around or ask your guide for some of the other places to hear some great late night jazz sessions. You will have an opportunity to buy CDs directly from the musicians at most venues we go to, they are typically $15-20 a piece (cash only), so please plan accordingly.
