Translated as ‘suspended in the air,’ ‘middle of the sky’ or ‘in the heavens above,’ Meteora is located just over 3 miles (5.4 km) from central Kalambaka and is a remote region of sandstone peaks where, from the 11th century onwards, monks settled. By the end of the 15th century, 24 monasteries had been systematically built on top of the towering rock formations. Today, only six monasteries remain, with just four — St Stephen, Holy Trinity, Moni Varlaam and Grand Meteora — still housing religious communities.
On arrival in Meteora, marvel at the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the awe-inspiring sandstone pillars and spend a few minutes snapping photos. With your local guide at your side, visit two of the remaining monasteries. As you explore the sites, listen to your guide share fascinating stories about the first hermits and monks who settled in Meteora, and discover their motivations for building the monasteries atop the sheer rock spires.
Then, head roughly 2.5 miles (4 km) south of Meteora to the prehistoric Theopetra Cave. Situated at the foot of the Chasia mountain range, the cave shows signs of being continuously inhabited from 135,000 BC to 4,000 BC and holds some of the earliest historical secrets in the world, including the oldest known man-made structure. (Note: Theopetra Cave is closed on Mondays, when you'll visit one additional monastery.)
After exploring the caves, board your air-conditioned minibus and relax on the journey back to Kalambaka. Your tour concludes at your hotel in the afternoon.
