Casa Noha is located in the center of Matera. Within its walls you can experience a multimedia-journey in the history of Matera's sassi (stones). An extraordinary explanation of the sassi from the prehistory until today, an absolute must for first-time visitors of the sassi!Thousands of years of history written in a brittle and porous rock such as tuff: the walls of Casa Noha not only tell the story of an old house, but of the whole town of Matera, from Prehistory to Today. “The invisible Sassi. An extraordinary journey in the history of Matera” edited by John Carrada, offers visitors an immersive experience that combines new technologies and culture, and that through rare and unpublished documents shows the first complete reconstruction of the city’s history from different perspectives, from architecture to art history, from archaeology to the history of cinema.
The little stone-house has been donated to the Italian Heritage Trust, FAI Fondo Ambiente Italiano, by a Matera family who loved the idea that FAI could guarantee the conservation of the memory of this vulnerable and impressive phenomenon: the Matera sassi!
The visitor sees a modest stone house, which unspoiled walls are used as screens for the video-representation that narrates the sassi's history and soul. The headphones with the audio are available in English and Italian. The duration of the whole video is about 20 minutes.
You can shop souvenirs, guides, maps and books in the bookshop.
It is highly recommended to visit Casa Noha before visiting Matera city and the sassi in order to get a deeper understanding of the sassi-phenomenon.
