Venture inland to the beautiful little town of Aix-en-Provence, glowing with artistic elegance at every turn.
With its ornate architecture and some of the grandest streets in Provence, Aix is a delight to explore. Take a walking tour down the Cours Mirabeau boulevard to see grandiose 17th- and 18th-century mansions, and then wander the tangle of narrow streets in Aix’s Old Town, lined with craft shops and lovely boutiques.
As you'll learn, the famous French painter Paul Cézanne was born in Aix, and now you can visit the place where he once worked, walk in the artist’s footsteps and see numerous artifacts that once inspired him. Entry to the Cézanne Studio is optional and at your own expense; alternatively, you can opt to continue exploring Aix independently.
Break for lunch in town (own expense) before reconvening with your guide and leaving Aix for the French Riviera. Cruising along the Côte d'Azur, stop to enjoy views from the top of Cape Canaille and look out at its sheer cliffs plunging into the blue waters of the Gulf of Cassis below.
From here, it’s just a short drive down the hill into the town of Cassis, where the afternoon is yours to spend at your leisure. In Cassis, there's as little or as much to do as you please -- stroll around the fishing port and harbor, sip rosé wine at a waterfront cafe, or visit the Cassis calanques, the area’s incredible limestone rock formations. Your guide can also point you in the right direction for a sightseeing boat trip (own expense).
After your time in Cassis, hop in the minivan and make your way back to Marseille, arriving at the port in the late afternoon.
