Its name refers to a cluster of brightly lit caves around Wied iz-Zurrieq harbor. Popular for its natural beauty, the Blue Grotto area has been featured in several award-winning movies such as the epic war film Troy. Either enjoy some free time to walk along the coast, or hop aboard a boat to visit the Blue Grotto at your own expense.
After spending time either at or nearby the Blue Grotto, continue by coach to the traditional fishing villages of Marsaxlokk and Birzebbuga. Amble about each of the picturesque villages, and admire their brightly colored iuzzus (fishing boats) bobbing on the water.
Continue to the village of Marsascala on Malta’s east coast to enjoy a break for lunch. With your guide, relax over a traditional Maltese 3-course meal with a glass of wine, and then set off to visit the nearby Tarxien Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Dating back to prehistoric times, the four megalithic temples that comprise the site are famous for their complex layout and decorative carvings. Walk around the excavations with your guide, and hear how the Tarxien Temples were once used for rituals such as animal sacrifices.
Once you have scrutinized excavations of sculptures and carvings, continue your tour to Ghar Dalam, a prehistoric grotto eerily nicknamed the ‘cave of darkness.’ The earliest evidence of human settlement on the island was found in Ghar Dalam, along with fossils of now-extinct animals such as dwarf elephants. Explore the public areas of the cave with your guide, and then wander around Ghar Dalam museum at leisure.
Return to your coach and relax on the way back to your Malta hotel, where your tour finishes.
Please note: the sea around the Blue Grotto is rocky, so boat rides are subject to cancellation if the weather is bad.
