Learn about the history and significance of this iconic sight on a walking tour with your own private guide. Then enjoy free time to explore the surrounding cobblestone village and watch the famous tide come in and surround the entire island. When your ship arrives at the Le Havre port, you’ll be picked up from the cruise terminal for your private shore excursion to Mont St-Michel, located about two hours away just off the Normandy coast. As you approach Mont St-Michel, you’ll be greeted with postcard-worthy views of the iconic abbey perched on a rocky island in a vast bay.
Follow your private guide on foot up to the hilly village until you reach the 8th-century Benedictine abbey located on the top of the mount. On your narrated walking tour, you'll learn all about the history, significance and architecture of the abbey, which was founded as a monastery by Archangel St Michael but over the years saw many other uses, including a prison, a strategic fortification and a major cultural and pilgrimage center during the Middle Ages. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most recognizable attractions in France.
Visit the church cloister and walk along the top of the fortification wall, built during the Hundred Years' War, when Mont St Michel became a castle. At the top of the hill, enjoy views over the bay, and don’t miss the amazing spectacle of the tide coming in and surrounding the entire island!
Your guide will then take you through the surrounding village. Wander cobblestone streets, browse shops and have lunch at a local restaurant (own expense). You'll then be escorted back to your vehicle for the return drive to Le Havre.
