Leave your centrally located Reykjavik hotel by luxury minivan, and travel out of the city to the Blue Mountains, roughly half an hour away. A volcanic region, the mountain range is home to a vast lava plateau that shields a series of subterranean tunnels, formed from centuries-old lava eruptions. Commonly known as lava tubes, the tunnels lead to caves complete with countless rock formations and craters.
On arrival at the mountains, hop out of your minivan, and put on the specialist caving equipment and helmet lights that your guide has brought. Then, follow your guide into Leiðarendi, one of Iceland’s most famous lava caves. Meaning ‘end-of-the-road’ in Icelandic, Leiðarendi is just that: a long and pitch-black tunnel that stops at an enchanting cave.
With the help of your helmet light, work your way over the tube’s lava rock and ice. The terrain is rugged, so at times you’ll need to crawl on your hands and knees and clamber over large rocks.
