Dress warmly and travel independently to the safari center in central Saariselkä. Here, listen to a safety briefing and instructions on riding your 2-person snowmobile. Then, when you’re ready, don your supplied helmet and thermal suit and set off with an expert guide leading the way.
Inhale the pure Lapland air as you cruise deep into the remote Lapland countryside. Follow trails around empty forests and fells and take turns to drive and ride your snowmobile as you wish.
Arrive at a frozen lake and head onto the ice for some ice fishing. Cut a hole in the ice, drop a line, and while you wait for a bite, hear how the Lapland peoples have used this technique for centuries to sustain themselves in winter. If you’re lucky, you’ll bring in a catch.
Afterward, strap on some snowshoes, and with instructions from your guide, take a short hike through the snow. Feel the thrill as you step easily over deep drifts using your new Arctic footwear, leaving crisp tracks behind you.
Also, ride your snowmobile into the forest, following different trails according to the weather on the day. Watch for forest animals and wild reindeer foraging in the snow for lichen. There’s a good chance of sightings and your guide will explain how these hardy animals can snuffle through three feet (one meter) of snow to reach their favorite food.
During your expedition, stop for lunch in a traditional kota. Warm up by the fire and enjoy a hearty meal such as reindeer meat casserole or salmon or reindeer meat broth, served with tea, coffee or water.
When the time comes, ride back to Saariselkä on your snowmobile, where your expedition ends at the safari center.
