Wrap up warm and start your experience in the darkness of early evening with a pickup from your centrally located hotel in Rovaniemi. Then, travel by car or minivan to the starting point of your quest for the Northern Lights, also called the Aurora Borealis.
Only visible in far northern locations, the Northern Lights are triggered by magnetic storms that paint curtains of fluorescent green, yellow, purple, blue and scarlet in the sky. Sightings can never be guaranteed, as they’re dependent on weather, location and chance, but your snowmobile guide will look for the most promising places to spot them as you ride.
When you arrive at the snowmobile center, listen to a safety briefing and instructions on driving your 2-seater snowmobile. Then, pull on your supplied helmet and set off in a convoy led by a guide.
Take turns to drive and ride pillion as you zoom along snowy trails, whizzing through deep forests and open countryside illuminated only by your headlights. On route, negotiate a frozen river (weather dependent) and look for the Northern Lights overhead. With cloudless weather and some luck, you may see them illuminating the night sky!
During your 1.5-hour ride, warm up around a campfire with a hot drink and snack. As you eat, listen to tales about the Northern Lights and why Lapland is a prime spot for witnessing this magnificent light show.
Return to your safari start point and then board your car or minivan for a drop-off back at your hotel, where your experience ends.
