Dress up warmly and make your own way to the starting point in central Luosto in the early evening. Board a minibus or coach and travel to a reindeer farm in the nearby forests.
Receive a friendly welcome from the traditionally costumed herders and meet the reindeers. Discover how these gentle Arctic animals have been used to transport goods in Lapland for centuries, partly thanks to their sharp hooves that cut easily through the snow.
After a safety briefing and instructions, hop aboard your sled and set off on your hunt for the Northern Lights. Only seen in far northern locations, the lights are created by magnetic storms and appear as radiant, multi-colored ribbons moving across the sky. Sightings can never be guaranteed, as they’re dependent on weather, location and chance, but your guide will know, and seek out, the most promising places to see them.
Follow your guide and enjoy the chill air as your reindeer-pulled sled glides through the dark forest. Drink in the stillness as you pass snow-coated pine trees and listen for the only sounds — the crunch of sled runners and reindeer hooves in the snow.
As you ride, watch for the Northern Lights. With luck and the very low artificial light pollution of Luosto, there’s a good chance of a sighting.
After roughly 30 minutes, arrive back and defrost around a campfire with some traditional, hot Finnish coffee. As you warm up, learn from the herders about reindeer husbandry and all it entails.
Then, say your goodbyes and drive back to central Luosto, where your tour ends.
